Traditional Festive Delicacies—Fruit Cake

The history of fruit cake can be traced back to Roman times. Across centuries and continents, from the Egyptians to the Victorians, people have added their own ingredients to the classic fruit cake recipe.


The British began their love affair with the fruit cake as early as the 15thcentury, when dried fruits were imported from the Mediterranean. Officially labeled "sinfully rich," fruit cakes were outlawed throughout Europein the early 18th century. The law was relaxed toward the end of the century,restricting fruit cake baking to holidays and wedding celebrations.
